Background and Structure
The Phoenix Association operates as a group of chapters, each standing on its own and serving an individual concentrated low income area in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Each chapter has its own director, its own sponsoring companies, its own Boy Scout units, its own income and expenses, and its own group of volunteer leaders.
A lean focused central administration is provided to assist the development of the chapters, to provide a standard system for measured results, to manage the finances, and to enforce a strong risk management program. In this manner, the Association is able to provide a community based program tailored to each service area while maintaining a safe and high quality operation.
The founding sponsors, Printpack, Inc., and Sanderson Industries, and other members of the Fulton Industrial Business Association, structured and funded this effort from the beginning. Each Association Chapter has an anchor sponsor whose financial commitment is essential to start and maintain chapter operations. Our anchor sponsors for our first three chapters are Printpack, Coca-Cola and Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation.
In addition, each chapter is supported by local companies who provide both financial support and work place mentoring. Our sponsor companies report that their company and individual employee commitments are valued not only for their benefits to the boys. They are also personally fulfilling for the mentors and good for the companies. Some of the first relationships established in the 1990's remain strong and productive. Some boys have become excellent employees.
